Belize City Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling as entry requirements can change without notice.
Belize City serves as the primary gateway to Belize, with Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport located approximately 10 miles northwest of the city center. As a popular Caribbean and Central American destination, Belize welcomes visitors from around the world with relatively straightforward entry requirements for most nationalities. The country's immigration policies are designed to facilitate tourism while maintaining border security, making it accessible for leisure travelers, business visitors, and those exploring the country's rich Mayan heritage and natural wonders. Most visitors arriving in Belize City will find the entry process efficient and welcoming. Citizens from many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and European Union nations, can enter Belize without obtaining a visa in advance. Upon arrival, immigration officers will stamp your passport with an initial authorized stay, typically for 30 days, which can be extended if needed. Travelers should be prepared to show proof of sufficient funds, onward or return tickets, and accommodation details. It's essential to ensure your passport has adequate validity (at least six months beyond your intended stay) and blank pages for entry stamps. While Belize's entry requirements are generally tourist-friendly, they can change based on international circumstances, health emergencies, or bilateral agreements. Always verify current requirements with official Belizean government sources or your nearest Belizean embassy or consulate before finalizing your travel plans.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Belize operates a visa-free entry policy for citizens of many countries, allowing tourists to enter for short stays without advance visa applications. However, requirements vary by nationality, and all visitors must meet certain conditions regardless of visa status.

Visa-Free Entry
Initially 30 days (can be extended up to 6 months total)

Citizens of these countries can enter Belize without obtaining a visa in advance and will receive an entry stamp upon arrival

Includes
United States Canada United Kingdom European Union member states Australia New Zealand Japan South Korea Singapore Hong Kong Norway Switzerland Iceland Mexico Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states

Visa-free travelers must still meet entry requirements including valid passport (6+ months validity), proof of sufficient funds (approximately USD $75 per day or USD $50 if pre-paid accommodation), return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation. The initial 30-day stay can be extended at immigration offices in Belize for a fee.

Visa Required
Varies by visa type, typically 30-90 days for tourist visas

Citizens of countries not on the visa-free list must obtain a visa before traveling to Belize

How to Apply: Visa applications must be submitted to the nearest Belizean embassy, consulate, or honorary consulate. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks. Required documents include completed application form, valid passport, passport photos, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, accommodation details, and visa fee payment.

Nationalities requiring visas include citizens of China, India, Russia, most African countries, and many Asian and Middle Eastern nations. The visa fee is approximately USD $100 but varies by nationality and visa type. Some applicants may be required to attend an interview. It's recommended to apply at least 4-6 weeks before intended travel.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport or other ports of entry in Belize, all travelers must go through immigration and customs procedures. The process is generally straightforward for those with proper documentation.

1
Disembarkation and Immigration Hall
After leaving the aircraft, follow signs to the immigration hall. Have your passport, completed arrival form (if provided on flight), and supporting documents ready. Lines are typically separated for Belizean nationals and foreign visitors.
2
Immigration Inspection
Present your passport and documents to the immigration officer. They will review your passport validity, verify your entry eligibility, and may ask questions about your visit. The officer will stamp your passport with an entry stamp indicating your authorized stay period (typically 30 days for visa-free travelers).
3
Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim to collect your checked luggage. Verify all bags are accounted for before proceeding to customs.
4
Customs Declaration
Complete a customs declaration form if you have items to declare or if required. Proceed through the appropriate customs channel (goods to declare or nothing to declare). Customs officers may inspect your luggage and ask questions about items you're bringing into the country.
5
Exit and Ground Transportation
Once cleared through customs, exit the secure area. Transportation options include authorized taxis, rental cars, hotel shuttles, and private transfers. Be aware of the departure tax (typically included in airline tickets but verify).

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Belize. Machine-readable passports are required. Ensure you have at least 2-3 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from Belize is required. This can be a return airline ticket, bus ticket to a neighboring country, or cruise documentation. Electronic confirmations are generally accepted.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel reservation, rental confirmation, or letter of invitation from a Belizean host. Immigration may ask where you're staying during your visit.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Evidence you can financially support yourself during your stay. This may include cash, credit cards, bank statements, or traveler's checks. The guideline is approximately USD $75 per day or USD $50 per day with pre-paid accommodation.
Visa (if required)
If your nationality requires a visa, you must obtain it before travel and present it with your passport at immigration.
Vaccination Certificate (if applicable)
Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from or transiting through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all required documents easily accessible in a travel folder before approaching immigration - don't pack them in checked luggage.
Be honest and concise when answering immigration questions. Avoid volunteering unnecessary information but answer all questions directly.
Dress appropriately and be courteous to immigration and customs officers. First impressions matter at border control.
Keep digital and physical copies of important documents (passport, tickets, hotel reservations) in case originals are lost.
Exchange some currency before arrival or have a credit card ready, as you may need to pay for transportation or unexpected fees.
If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, inquire about extension procedures at immigration or plan to visit an immigration office in Belize City or Belmopan during your stay.
Arrive at the airport with plenty of time before departure as you'll need to pay a departure tax if not included in your ticket (currently around BZD $73 or USD $37.50).
Download or screenshot important information (hotel addresses, emergency contacts) as internet access may be limited immediately upon arrival.

Customs & Duty-Free

Belize Customs and Excise Department regulates the import of goods into the country. All travelers must declare items that exceed duty-free allowances or fall under restricted categories. Understanding customs regulations helps ensure a smooth entry process and avoids penalties.

Alcohol
1 liter of spirits or wine
Must be 18 years or older. Amounts exceeding this limit are subject to duty.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco
Must be 18 years or older. Tobacco products are subject to duty if exceeding these limits.
Currency
Amounts over USD $10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared
There is no limit on currency import/export, but amounts exceeding USD $10,000 must be declared on arrival and departure. Failure to declare can result in seizure and penalties.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to BZD $200 (USD $100) value
Items for personal use during your stay are generally duty-free. Commercial quantities or items clearly for resale will be taxed. Keep receipts for valuable items.
Perfume
50 grams of perfume
Reasonable quantities for personal use are typically allowed without issue.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - Belize has strict drug laws with severe penalties including imprisonment
  • Firearms and ammunition - unless prior authorization obtained from Belize Police Department
  • Counterfeit goods - including fake designer items, pirated media, and counterfeit currency
  • Obscene or pornographic materials - subject to local standards and regulations
  • Certain plants and plant products - without phytosanitary certificates to prevent agricultural pests
  • Endangered species products - items made from protected animals or plants under CITES regulations
  • Lottery tickets and materials - gambling materials from other jurisdictions
  • Explosives and fireworks - without special permits

Restricted Items

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant materials - require import permits and phytosanitary certificates from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority
  • Meat and animal products - require veterinary health certificates and import permits; processed/canned products may be allowed in small quantities
  • Pets (dogs and cats) - require import permits, health certificates, rabies vaccination records, and microchip identification
  • Prescription medications - should be in original containers with prescriptions; quantities should be reasonable for personal use during stay
  • Drones and UAVs - may require special permits from civil aviation authorities; check current regulations before bringing
  • Professional equipment - cameras, diving gear, and other professional equipment may need temporary import documentation
  • Fishing and hunting equipment - may require special permits depending on intended use
  • Radio transmitters and communication devices - certain frequencies require authorization

Health Requirements

Belize has specific health requirements for entry, primarily related to yellow fever prevention. While most travelers from North America and Europe face minimal health entry requirements, it's essential to verify current regulations and recommended precautions.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required ONLY if arriving from or transiting through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Travelers aged 1 year and older must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Countries include most of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Transit through airports in these countries, even without leaving the airport, may trigger this requirement.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure you're up to date on routine vaccines including MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), polio, and influenza
  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers as contamination can occur through food or water
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Typhoid - Recommended for travelers eating outside major restaurants and hotels
  • Rabies - Recommended for adventure travelers, those working with animals, or visiting remote areas
  • Malaria prophylaxis - While not a vaccination, anti-malarial medication is recommended for certain rural areas; consult your doctor

Health Insurance

While not legally required for entry, comprehensive travel health insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors to Belize. Medical facilities in Belize City and major towns are adequate for routine issues but serious conditions may require medical evacuation to the United States or other countries, which can be extremely expensive. Ensure your insurance covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and medical evacuation. Many travel insurance policies also cover trip cancellation, lost luggage, and other travel disruptions.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly based on global health situations. While COVID-19 testing and vaccination requirements have been largely removed as of 2024, travelers should verify current health protocols before departure. Check the official Belize Tourism Board website and your country's travel advisory for the latest information on testing requirements, quarantine rules, health declarations, and any emerging health concerns. Some countries may have exit requirements that differ from Belize's entry requirements.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children, including infants, must have their own valid passport to enter Belize. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the child's travel. This letter should include the child's name, parent's contact information, travel dates, and destinations. If one parent has sole custody, bring documentation proving this. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents. Children traveling with adults who are not their parents (relatives, friends, school groups) should have notarized consent from both parents. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationship. These requirements help prevent child abduction and trafficking.

Traveling with Pets

Belize allows the import of cats and dogs under specific conditions. Required documents include: (1) Import Permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), which must be obtained before travel; (2) Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 14 days of travel, certifying the animal is healthy and free from contagious diseases; (3) Rabies Vaccination Certificate showing vaccination administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before entry; (4) Microchip identification is recommended. Pets must be at least 4 months old. Upon arrival, pets will be inspected by BAHA officials. There may be quarantine requirements depending on country of origin. Birds, reptiles, and other exotic pets have additional restrictions. Contact BAHA well in advance of travel for current requirements and permit applications. Airlines have their own pet travel policies.

Extended Stays

Tourists initially granted 30 days can extend their stay up to a maximum of 6 months (180 days) total. To extend, visit an Immigration Office in Belize City, Belmopan, or other district offices before your current authorization expires. Extensions are granted in 30-day increments. Required documents include valid passport, proof of sufficient funds, proof of accommodation, and onward ticket (which can be updated). Extension fees apply (approximately BZD $100 per month). For stays beyond 6 months, you may need to apply for a different visa category such as a work permit, student visa, or residency. Overstaying without authorization can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans. If you plan to stay long-term, consult with immigration officials or an attorney about appropriate visa categories and residency options.

Business Visitors

Business visitors entering Belize for meetings, conferences, negotiations, or exploring business opportunities can generally enter on a tourist visa/stamp. However, you cannot engage in gainful employment or receive payment from Belizean sources without a work permit. When entering, be prepared to explain your business purpose and show supporting documents such as invitation letters from Belizean companies, conference registration, or business meeting schedules. If you plan to work in Belize, even temporarily, you must obtain a work permit before commencing employment. Work permits require employer sponsorship and approval from the Labour Department. Processing can take several weeks to months.

Cruise Ship Passengers

Cruise ship passengers arriving at Belize City's cruise terminal (Fort Street Tourism Village) are subject to simplified entry procedures. You'll need a valid passport (passport card not accepted for cruise travel requiring air return). Ship staff typically handle immigration formalities, and passengers can disembark with their cruise ship ID card. You're generally allowed to stay in Belize for the duration of your ship's port call (usually 8-12 hours). Shore excursions are available through the cruise line or independent operators. Ensure you return to the ship before departure time. If you plan to leave the ship and travel independently in Belize before or after the cruise, follow standard entry procedures including having return tickets and accommodation proof.

Dual Nationals

If you hold Belizean citizenship along with another nationality, you must enter and exit Belize using your Belizean passport. Belize recognizes dual citizenship, but Belizean nationals are expected to use Belizean travel documents when entering/exiting the country. If you've lost your Belizean passport or it has expired, contact the Immigration Department or nearest Belizean embassy/consulate before travel to obtain proper documentation. Using a foreign passport when you're a Belizean national may cause complications at immigration.
