Belize City sits on the Caribbean coast at sea level, pressed between the mouth of the Belize River and the sea, which means its weather is shaped by two forces that matter more than any calendar: the northeast trade winds blowing off the Caribbean, and the seasonal rain patterns that divide the year into a genuine dry season and a pronounced wet one. Neither is extreme by tropical standards. Temperatures barely shift across the twelve months, hovering between 20°C (69°F) on cool January nights and 31°C (88°F) during the warmest months of the year. The rainfall swings, however, are dramatic. October, at the height of the wet season, dumps around 12.0 inches (305 mm) on average, while March stays nearly bone-dry at 1.6 inches (41 mm). If you only learn one thing about planning a trip to Belize City, it's that what season you land in matters far more than what temperature to expect. The dry season runs from roughly late November through April, with February and March being the most reliably clear months. This is when the trade winds pick up properly, cutting through the humidity and making outdoor activity pleasant in a way that's hard to appreciate until you've felt the difference. The wet season arrives in earnest by June and from there through November you're dealing with weather that can shift fast: bright mornings followed by heavy afternoon downpours, or multi-day grey stretches punctuated by sudden bursts of sunshine. September and October mark the statistical peak of hurricane season for the western Caribbean, and Belize City has historically borne the brunt of major storms, which is worth taking seriously when planning rather than dismissing. Humidity stays at around 70% year-round, which is relatively manageable for the tropics and a long way from the oppressive wall of moisture you encounter in parts of Southeast Asia. That said, even 70% humidity at 31°C (89°F) in June has a way of announcing itself by mid-afternoon, in the city's older neighborhoods where the sea breeze doesn't always penetrate inland. You won't be miserable in the wet season. But you will want to structure active days around the mornings.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
For beach and relaxation travelers, the months of February through April are the sweet spot. Rainfall is at or near its annual low, trade winds keep conditions comfortable, and the Caribbean waters off the cayes close to Belize City are calm and clear. February is the standout month for anyone hoping to combine the city with time on the Barrier Reef.
Cultural
Travelers focused on cultural exploration tend to do best in January through March. The dry conditions make wandering the Fort George district and the colonial architecture of the waterfront more pleasant, and the cooler overnight temperatures in January mean you're not exhausted by mid-morning. Crowds are present but manageable during this window.
Adventure
For adventure and day-trip-focused visitors, March and April offer the most reliable conditions. Altun Ha, the Belize Zoo, and the inland reserves are accessible rather than waterlogged, the heat hasn't yet peaked, and the dry underfoot conditions make a significant practical difference if you're spending time on unpaved roads or trails.
Budget
Budget travelers who can be flexible about weather will find September and October offer the most favorable rates and the least competition for accommodations in Belize City. The trade-off is real: these are the wettest months and the riskiest for hurricanes. Plenty of weeks pass without significant disruption, and travelers willing to monitor forecasts and hold loose bookings often find this the most economical window by a considerable margin.
